Question: Why is the power of a loudspeaker produced in watts

  1. The unit of power (generally) is the Watt – so it’s just a measure of how much power it’s using. The power is usually related to how loud the speaker can be, because the power is moving the speaker bits that make the sound, and the more they move, the louder the sound and the more they move the more power that needs to do that. So we use Watts for all electrical stuff.

[the bits that move, by the way, are the cones inside – if you ever take the front off a speaker (ask permission) you can see them. You won’t see them move when the sound’s on, but you can sometimes feel them if you put your finger there. The vibrations cause the air vibrations which you ear knows as sound.]
