Question: how big is the brain?

Keywords: , ,

  1. Mine’s just smaller than my head.

Are you asking how many neurons and things? Answer: a lot. hundreds of billions of neurons, and even more glial cells, which do something that’s not totally clear at the moment. It makes your XBox look like a pocket calculator.

The brain is the most complicated thing we know. One of the biggest research projects in the world is called the Blue Brain project. It’s happening in Europe. A huge amount of money and the biggest supercomputers are being brought together to try to build, in a computer, a model of a brain. After 2 years of work, they are nearly ready to imitate a little bit of … a rat brain. And that’s the best we can do. Whether it will work is a different thing, and whether we can ever build a model of a human brain – who knows. That sounds like a good research project for you to aim for!

  2. What does a brain do when it sees a friend across the street?

    Gives it a brain wave!

The brain is just slightly smaller than the size of your skull. There is also muscles and bone in there, but most of the space is taken up by your brain.

The brain weighs about 1.5 kilograms and is made up of neurons, which transmit information, and glial cells, which support the neurons.
