Question: If you had a high amount of money to donate to ANY organisation (e.g. a charity or science research program), what would you donate to & why?

  1. I’d be tempted to give it to something like water aid because access to clean water is such an important part of health around the world. But then I’d also want to give it to Alan Fenwick, the guy who runs the schisto control initiative, which are the guys who will use the drug I’m working on. But then I’d also want to give it to a malaria charity, because we’re just starting a project to find a new malaria drug. Maybe the World Health Organisation. Or the Gates Foundation – they’re funding some very cool ideas. Or maybe NASA because that’s just wow.

Don’t know. In terms of immediate impact on people, Water Aid. A lot of the world’s problems are down to the fact that people don’t have clean water to drink.

Oh, no, wait. I’d want to fund solar power. We need to stop burning oil. I’d fund research into solar power. Or maybe fusion’s better. Aargh.

  2. this is a difficult question. all these charitable organisations and science research programs do very valuable work that help people. choosing any one organisation or program does not devalue the others because they are all significant. Matt has said water aid because water is a survival issue. I agree. However, I’d be tempted to choose another survival issue — trying to develop energy technologies that have less impact on global climate.

  3. A high amount of money huh? I had to sleep on this question. It’s a big responsibility deciding who or what should be given money because it is the same as me saying that something is more important than something else even though that other thing I’m not giving money to is also important. It’s also really hard because I can only give it to one organisation.

In the end I can’t really decide. If I had that sort of money I would set up a foundation where the money would be looked after and invested in the right places to fund different groups each year.

I would like to fund projects that used science to help people and also taught people about science and how to use it in their lives so things like…

    – Programs to provide clean drinking water to people and also teaching them how to keep their source of drinking water clean.

    – Space programs simply because the researchers and scientists are working on things that no one has ever dreamed of and it encourages new ways of thinking, something that is needed to solve problems. And boy do we have a lot of problems.

    – Medical programs that don’t just provide medicines but also education on how keep healthy and safe from diseases. It is so easy to treat illnesses but I am a strong believer of preventing illnesses in the first place.

    – Education. When I think about how lucky I’ve been to get the education I have had so far, I think that it is incredibly unfair that the majority of people on the planet don’t even get the chance to finish school. Sometimes this sounds like fun but it makes things so much harder, in not just getting a job but the most important thing that I learned from my education is how to learn. Without learning, how will I ever understand anything new.

So things like that. Sorry I couldn’t give one answer. It was too hard for me to decide.

  4. That’s a really difficult decision to make. I would want to give large amounts of money to lots of great charities and research programs. That’s the sort of thing that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation does (but I don’t think they would need any money from me!). The Foundation gives money to researchers to look for cures for diseases like malaria and AIDS, and to improve farming practices so that people in poorer countries especially have enough food.

If I did have to choose one thing though I would put it toward research into sustainable energy sources, like solar, wind and wave power. We need to develop these things now and use them more, as oil won’t last forever and we’re doing a lot of damage to our environment.

  5. That is a difficult choice to make. I really truly think that so many of the big issues in the world come down to a lack of education in some of the poorest countries (and also first world countries too). Have you heard of the saying “When you educate a woman, you educate a family”?

Many of the world’s environmental concerns come from there just being way too many people on this planet. I think that educating women in particular will really help to slow the world’s population growth – giving women the opportunity to plan a family and give their children access to good quality education is such a crucial thing to promote. So I would donate my money to charities that support education of disadvantaged and poverty stricken people
