Question: why do you hear a strange buzzing noise when you are alone in complete silence?

  1. OK, I’m assuming that you:

    1) Have switched off your phone, and like not just to VIBRATE
    2) Are not in the cinema
    3) Are not in a beehive

Sounds in our ears are detected by little hairs that vibrate and move. Normally these recover after regular sounds. If the sounds are very loud, or go on for a long time, our ears can be temporarily damaged and can act as though they are experiencing sounds, even though they’re not. I’m pretty sure that the brain can also be fooled into thinking a sound is continuing even though it isn’t if you’ve been listening to a sound for a long time and then it turns off.

So a buzzing could be a sign that you’re listening to too much music too loudly, for example. Over time, things should repair and you should “hear” silence again through a combination of your brain and ears re-aligning.

  2. when it really really quiet then there are two types of buzzing. One is when your ear nerves are damaged so the brain is receiving nerve messages that it interprets as buzzing, even though there is no sound to cause those nerve messages. The second is that we become more aware of the sounds that are normally blocked by loader sounds — things like the sound of the flow of air, the sound of blood moving, etc, etc.

  3. There are two reasons for this.

The first is quite scary and also why you shouldn’t have your mp3 player volume so loud. In the ear are tiny little hairs that move in response to the sounds that we hear. If they are exposed to constant loud noise they remain vibrating of sometimes flattened leading to a buzzing noise or high pitched noise. First this can start off quiet but if it can get worse and the buzzing can start affecting hearing. So it’s important to protect your hearing.

The other reason and a LOT LESS scary is that when it’s really quiet, the quieter sounds can be heard. In a quiet room with fluorescent tube lighting, you can hear their humming. I once lived in a flat in a building complex that had a cockroach problem once and when it was quiet, I could hear them running about, but only when I was quiet. It didn’t take long to call in the pest control!

For absolutely no outside noise at all, you need to be in a soundproof room like the ones used at recording studios. Now these are so quiet that if is so easy to become disoriented because after a while the room feels bigger than what it is because it’s so quiet.
