Question: What causes a lunar eclipse?

  1. Occasionally the sun, earth and moon line up so that the earth is in the middle. That means the moon is in earth’s shadow, and goes dark. It’s quite rare for the lineup to be just right, and doesn’t last too long because everything’s always moving.

    Awesome to see one, though. Makes the sky suddenly look 3-D, and you get an idea of distances.
