Hi jrmoncrieff, I’m not actually sure if I’m allowed to say it on here! I’ll have to check with my boss because there are rules about intellectual property. Intellectual property is sort of like putting a trademark on an idea. So the idea of what this protein might do belongs to my boss because he’s the one who came up with it. It’s something new, and other Labs might be working on it, so we don’t want to tell them exactly what we’re doing in case they try to do it first! It’s very important in science to get your work published in journals, and only the first people to discover something get to publish it.
Maybe that’s all a bit extreme, but I’ve decided to talk about what the protein might do without naming it as I’m sure that’s more interesting and I don’t want to get into trouble!
