Question: if you could invent anything what would it be?

  1. Hmm, this probably isn’t the answer you’re looking for, but I think so many of the world’s problems are due to people missing out on a decent education, particularly in third-world countries. So I guess I’d like to invent a way to give more people an education so they can make good decisions for themselves, their families and their society.

  2. Time machine. I’d take a bunch of diagrams about how to generate electricity, how to purify water, a map of the world, a picture of the Earth from space and a history of the human race as I knew it, and I’d show it to some smart people. There would be a language problem. So I’d need a Babel Fish, which doesn’t exist yet. But with my time machine I could go to the future to get one.

  3. This is tough. I could be selfish and say the flying car because it is about time we had those. There’s been so many shows with flying cars and we still haven’t got them yet. Or do I think of something that could make the world a better place to live in like a device that can diagnose any medical condition on the spot so people wouldn’t need to wait days or weeks to know what was wrong with them.

I guess if I really had to work on something, I would like to help people come together to share their ideas on how to solve problems with one another. It’s not really an invention but I think before doing anything in the community it is important to hear the views of as many people as possible.

  4. Ok, so this is what I had in mind when I decided I wanted to be a scientist.

Do you know that plants are able to produce their own food (sugars) from sunlight by a process called photosynthesis? In the green parts of the plant is a chemical called chlorophyll inside little sacs called chloroplasts. Chlorophyll is green and gives the green colour to the leaves of plants. When sunlight hits the chlorophyll it is able to turn carbon dioxide and water into sugar molecules. The plant then uses these sugars the same way we use food.

So my idea was, how brilliant would it be to put these chloroplasts into human skin cells so we can make our own food. With the growing population and problems with global food supply, not to mention an abundance of sunlight and carbon dioxide, we could solve a heap of problems by becoming photosynthetic ourselves. We might also get a delicate green tinge to our skin which could be cool.

Now that I’ve had a bit more experience of science I can see that doing this would be very hard, and that people might be a bit reluctant to literally ‘go green’ and walk around scantily clad in order to provide more surfaces for photosynthesis. I do think that feeding everyone in the world is already a massive challenge and one that is only going to get bigger with population growth and environmental instability. So it would be great to invent something that would fulfill that most basic need, and personally, I think being green would be pretty cool.

  5. An efficient source of energy. The best would be to use sunlight to power everything. Or build our own sun in the form of a hydrogen fusion reactor. Hydrogen fusion has no nuclear waste.

Energy drives the world we like in. Enough energy to purify water, grow food, make medicines, clean up waste and so on.
