Question: what tools do you use to study the lizards ?

Keywords: , , ,

  1. I use a whole lot of different microscopes to look at the embryos and the uterus of the lizard. Some of the microscopes reflect light (light microscopes) – these are like the ones you might use at school. But I also use some which detect fluorescent chemicals, and these microscopes can be worth almost a million dollars, so I need to be very careful when I use them.

But the most high powered microscopes I use don’t reflect light, but reflect an electron beam! These microscopes are in a building that is reinforced so that slight tremors in the earth don’t make the microscopes wobble. I can see things that are less that a micron long. This is one millionth of a meter, or one hundredth the width of a human hair!

I also work in a genetics lab. Here I use equipment that extracts DNA from tissue samples and decodes it’s sequence
